After observing the temperature changes in the recent past as compared to seasonal patterns of my childhood I came across an interesting hypothesis that led me into believing that the climatic change in the world may be a universal phenomenon resulting from the change in axis of a heavenly body or its land mass. I developed this hypothesis a year ago and discussed it with a couple of my friends starting with Manas Bhaskar but due to the lack of any clear evidence I resumed my efforts in other thought experiments I was conducting at the time.
The rationale behind the idea of the axial shift of any heavenly body is the centrifugal force it experiences while trying to escape the gravitational pull of the parent body. Earth trying to escape the gravity of the Sun and Moon trying to escape the gravity of the Earth are examples of such relationships. I imagine the Universe as being composed of one fundamental fabric which must be the most fundamental matter and there should be no vacuum ideally. The rotation of the heavenly bodies which are the more denser and concentrated versions of the same fundamental fabric causes the fabric to rotate with it in a fashion similar to that of whirlpools, cyclones and tornadoes. Due to this twirling of the fabric, the smaller heavenly bodies, which are smaller in mass as well in their influence on the twirling of the fabric around them are caught in cosmic cyclone of the higher parent body. This is happening all over the universe. This means that the universe as a whole is rotating causing the prime cosmic cyclone of which all the other motion inside is an effect. This causes the formation of the complex system of the universe. The force exerted in cosmic cyclones is gravity.
If one imagines the scene from the ‘Pirates of the Caribbean’ movie where Captain Jack Sparrow tries to steer his beloved ship ‘The Black Pearl’ out of the huge whirlpool one can imagine the effect a cosmic body will experience in the huge cosmic whirlpools caused by greater heavenly bodies. If the ship exerts enough counter force to the whirlpool, its center of axis will start moving away from the axis of whirlpool or the cosmic body causing it. If my hypothesis is considered I am making a more fundamental assertion here, that there is no distinction between matter, space and energy as such. The mistake we make is that we consider space and matter to be two different aspects of the Universe making the analysis of the universe complicated due to the addition of a variable that is simply not there. Space is only the expression of the extension of the matter. The primordial matter is the most fundamental extension making the analysis of the universe complicated due to the addition of a variable that is simply not there. Space is only an expression of the extension of the matter, the primordial matter being the most fundamental extension. As the densities and combination of this primordial matter changes, the apparent change in space takes place as well. In physics what we call the warping of the space is nothing more than the warping of the primordial matter and its various forms.
As a result, certain amount of matter should be able to acquire only a certain amount of space and no more. Here the mass of the matter gives the amount of the matter. So as the density of mass of the matter increases so does the density of the space. There is no such thing as a certain amount of space being able to contain different amounts of matter. We tend to differentiate matter and space because when the matter moves relative to other matter it gives us an impression that it is moving relative to something more fundamental than matter itself, which we assume to be space. But if the existence of space as distinct from matter is asserted then what should we make of the vacuum. To that the answer must be that there is no true vacuum but we assume it to be when we are not able to observe anything that can be considered as matter as we have defined it to be. There is no true vacuum because there is energy everywhere in the universe and as Einstein himself has shown in his theory of relativity that mass and energy are one and the same thing. So when we mix Einstein’s ideas with my own then we find that there is no difference between space, time, energy and matter but all of them are only different versions of our understanding of something fundamentally same.
Now because space, energy and matter are one and the same thing then the thing they are representing should ideally be universal in its nature. Although there is particularity and individuality within the universality of the universe, but everything exists as part of the whole. Now imagine the effect of this universality of the fundamental fabric or primordial matter that exists. As the density of this fundamental fabric increases in lumps in different parts of the universe, it becomes energy. The increase in the density of energy leads into formation of quantum particles, then atoms and molecules leading to more complex matter at every stage of increase in density. Since the fundamental fabric is one whole, as the density of the parts increases so does the force between the comparatively loose and tight parts seeming to us that the space-time has warped. But actually what is happening at the basic level is that due to the increase in the density of the fundamental thing is stretched giving to us the experience of force.
What has caused this fundamental fabric to rotate or be in motion is not the concern of this hypothesis. This question has been taken up by many physicists oh high esteem but with no conclusive solution. The prime motion of the Universe demands some external force which we, as part of the scientific paradigm, deny on the grounds of lack of proof at the present and anytime in the future.
If the analogy of ‘The Black Pearl’ is to be extended on heavenly bodies, in our case Earth the following implications may entail.
Due to the shift in the Earth’s axis the polar regions maybe moving away from the axial focus resulting in the change in the heat received from the sun. If assuming that the region around the northern axis are moving towards the southern axis and the regions around the southern axis are moving up towards the Northern axis in a cyclical rotation, it can be contemplated how this change in the axis of the earth will affect the climate of the planet. North Pole regions due to their movement towards the south of the axis due to the shift would start to receive more sunlight and hence would start to melt the polar ice caps. Similar conditions would prevail in around the South Pole where due to the northern movement of the regions around the south pole, these regions would start receiving more sunlight and therefore melting the polar icecaps in the south as well. Now due to the axial shift similar type of movement will be seen in other parts of the world. India will become more equatorial and start receiving more heat and thus the climate in India will become much warmer. Throughout this winter we have experience this kind of effect. There have been short and less cold winters in this and previous years.
Even if land mass reorganization due to the movement in Earth’s tectonic plates is considered, a similar hypothesis can be developed where the reach of the Sun’s heat changes in intensity in the affected regions and thus causing a fair change in the climatic conditions of the planet. But if ever such a hypothesis is considered, the industrialists would start questioning the very effort that the environmentalists have made in the past few decades in strengthening their argument for Global Warming. They would argue that the greenhouse gases emission is not the reason for the melting of the polar ice cap and thus the rise in the ocean’s water level. To that I would say that Global Warming would still play a decisive role in the climatic conditions of the Earth in the future. This is because the regions of land that will replace the polar region in the future and are already replacing in the present are the regions of human habitation where the emission of greenhouse gasses is considerably high. Hence the regions that will be and are replacing the polar regions will experience the greenhouse effect and thus making it difficult for the polar regions to be replaced with the equally polar regions. These new regions will be warmer and thus although the old ice would be melting, there will not be the formation of newer ice.
This kind of theory would also fit on how ten thousand years ago there was ice age on the land mass. This maybe because at that time the Earth’s axis was closer to the main land mass and thus freezing it. This will also help in predicting the future weather conditions through a larger scale of time, and even on other heavenly bodies. Although I realize that such a hypothesis may be empirically absurd as of now but it most certainly defines a distinct and alternate perspective in which the problem of climatic change may be observed, analyzed and evaluated. The reason will also be the lack of statistical data. Due to the absence of such a perspective data has never been collected to prove something like this. Also I have not in any way researched about such axial shifts. But recently I came across an article that highlights the letter written by the people of the Inuit tribe, natives of the Alaska region, to NASA claiming the shift in the axis of the Earth based on their life long experience. The article is being produced below for reference.
The Inuit Tribe are indigenous people who live in the Canadian Arctic, Greenland, Siberia and Alaska. Their elders have written to the National Space and Aeronautics Administration (NASA) to tell them that the Earth’s axis has shifted. The elders do not believe that carbon emissions from humans are causing the current climate changes.
The sky has changed, claim Inuit elders
The Inuit elders note climate change in the melting glaciers, deterioration of sealskin, burns on seals, and disappearing sea ice. They attribute these changes in climate to changes in the sky. The tribal elders claim that the sun no longer rises where it used to rise. The days heat up more quickly and last longer. The stars and moon are also in different places in the sky and this affects the temperatures. This is a population that relies on the placement of the moon and stars for their survival as they live in total darkness during part of the year.
The elders say they can no longer predict the weather, as they have been able to in the past. They observe that warmer winds are changing the snow banks, making their ability to navigate overland more difficult. Polar bear populations are increasing, which causes the bears to wander into the Inuit neighborhoods.
What scientists report
On April 20, 2011, CNN News reported that an earthquake moved the main island of Japan by 8 feet and shifted the Earth on its axis. They quoted Kenneth Hudnut, a geophysicist with the U.S. Geological Survey, as saying, “At this point, we know that one GPS station moved (8 feet), and we have seen a map from GSI (Geospatial Information Authority) in Japan showing the pattern of shift over a large area is consistent with about that much shift of the land mass.”
They quoted the National Institute of Geophysics and Volcanology in Italy, that estimated that “the 8.9-magnitude quake shifted the planet on its axis by nearly 4 inches (10 centimeters).” Astronomers concur that there has not been a shift in the earth’s rotational axis, but that there have been subtle polar shifts over the last ten years. This is a change in what is called the figure axis.
These changes are caused by continental drift, which has been shifting the location of the North Pole towards the south about 10 cms per year for the last 100 years. Teams at the University of Texas using NASA’s GRACE satellite found that the North Pole’s normal drifting to the south changed in 2005 and since then, the drift has been eastward. They detected a 1.2 meter change from 2005 to 2013. They conclude that the shift is caused by climate change caused by global warming.
About the Inuit or Eskimo people
The Inuit people inhabit the far northern reaches of the Canadian Arctic and have done so for centuries. The area they inhabit is almost continually frozen under a layer of permafrost. For months at a time, their days begin and end in darkness. A nomadic people, they built tents or teepees of caribou skin in warmer months, and lived in igloos in the winter. Previously, they were known as Eskimo. The word Eskimo is from a word in their language that means “eater of raw meat.” This group of Arctic dwellers has now been renamed Inuit, a word that means “the people.” Inuk is the word to describe one member of the tribe, or “one person.” The Inuit speak many different dialects that all stem from the Eskimaleut or Inuit-Aleut language. They are primarily hunters, relying on Arctic wildlife for their survival. They fish, hunt sea mammals, such as seals and walrus, and land mammals, like Arctic hare and caribou and use seal skin and blubber for clothing, tents, and fuel. Most of their diet is made up of raw meat as there is very little plant life in their environment.
